The Catholic Church and salvation?

Colin asked the question: During the Reformation and even today, Protestants and Catholics debate over how one acheives (receives?) salvation. (there is, of course, even disagreements among the many Protestant denominations).
What are the present teachings in The Catholic Church regarding salvation? Who is saved? How important are the sacraments?
