When Jesus said, “On this rock I will build MY church” (Mt 16:18), what church was he talking about?

Bruce asked the question: There are now over 30,000 Christian denominations. Which one did Jesus authorize and promise, “The gates of hell will not prevail against it”? (Note: The pronoun “it” is singular.)
