Has church become a place of gossip and socialization rather than serious worship?
$grant$ asked the question:
Its seems like it in a lot of churchs. Are there any denominations that have mostly serious congregations?

hasn’t it always.
Alot of churches have gotten like that, but not all of them. There are still some of us out there who are serious and sincere.
if you want to really see how it should work look for stories or books about the jesus revolution in the 70’s. and yes before and after church there should be socializing iron sharpens iron it is good to be around and be friends with other christians.
unfortunatly yes. I am a christian and it kills me to admit this. not everybody is like this though. the reason this happens is because we are all sinners. i think this is most common with big churches though. little churches are too intatmit to have these problems because the gossip will always get back to the orriginal person. I go to a really big church and one of my friends (who goes to the same church) had a rummor going around about her saying she was gay. this is also partly because of the new generation. they have not been taught reverency. they think they are intitled to everything and that life should be easy. so when its not they make it worse for others.
Definitely … they’ve always been that way!! A bunch of hypocrites!!
I don’t think you can generalize to any particular denomination, you have to look at it on a church by church basis.
One of the challenges I see to serious worship is tradition. There are so many churches that are doing the same things they did 50 years ago, and are so resistant to change that they are unable to reach everyone they should. Its obvious when you walk into one of these churches because you see a congregation of “grey hairs.”
The other problem to serious worship is churches that have watered down their theology so much that their services sound more like self-help seminars than worship.
tHere is socialization, but as far as I’ve seen, no gossip. We are all sinners, and we can’t help it. And besides, we’re supposed to have at least a little socialization. What if there’s a new person in the church? Would you just leave them alone and ignore them? You want to at least make them feel welcome.
alot of churches have but there are a few who haven’t
I never see church as a gathering of angels and holy ethereal beings.
I see it as a place where sinners meet up and trying to be better in worshipping the Lord.
Surely the sin of gossip has been everywhere.
any denominations will have the same problem.
The real issues is not to dwell on it and try to find a better place to go to, but rather help the church to eliminate that disease.
If your friends start gossiping in the church, just say to them that you are not interested in hearing the junks.
Church is in your heart not in a building. You have to keep trying, reguardless of which denomination, when you find the right place to worship you will know. You will feel it when you walk in, while you sing and you will leave with a smile on your face the devil himself will not be able to wipe off. Definintion of church: when two or more gather together to worship.
That is why I attend Calvary Chapels. I have seen way to many churches that are JUST like you describe. Alot of yacking, but not about the Bible or praying for each other.
This question shows that you have a very modern concept of God and what it means to be christian. Define “serious” worship. If you mean a nice stage production with lights, fog, music, dancing and leaving with a feel good attitude. Lord help you.
Worship has nothing to do with singing songs; it is a way of life. You should seek to be like Jesus in that you work for peace and justice in the world while showing compassion and love. The current thought is much of American Christianty, which is really a cult that uses few of the teachings of the bible, is to become involved in politics, tell everyone how to live and sweet Jesus keep me near the cross, the Jesus diet. These people must be stopped.
Ok back on subject. Look at the times Jesus spent with people. They were spent with groups of friends over good food, good wine and great stores. They sat for hours and talked with one another. This goes to the heart or core of being a christian. We become closer to God by becoming closer with one another.
From my experience in the UCC, I have come to refer to them as, “The Politically Correct Social Club.” & Look how many years the ELCA tolerates sexual iniquity (because the “just don’t know” if homosexuality goes against church doctrine… evidently they don’t care about God’s Law) - their last national convention was an abominable embarrassment, even to a former member. Jesus stands outside the door of the church of Laodicea & knocks… He’s left standing outside a lot of institutional churches.
God knows His people (those who are truly faithful to Him, love Him, love His Word, obey Him, worship & serve Him) - there is always a remnant, but they are generally under the cultural radar.
The institutional churches use worldly standards to measure their success: member count, collection tallies, physical edifices (not that they are like idols - or are they?)
“…for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”
