Interested in attending church?

labellephilomene asked the question:

I was raised with no particular faith but am interested in seeing if Christianity is right for me.
How does someone who’s interested in beginning to attend church start?
I want to attend a denomination that’s fairly “liberal” and non-evangelist… something that espouses the basic principles of Christianity, in an openminded way. I’m not comfortable with singing hymns and the like. Does such a church exist?

Considering there are hundreds and hundreds of sects of Christianity, yes, you can find a church like the one you describe. You might want to try a place like a Unitarian Universalist church first though. Regardless, if you found a church, try talking with the church’s pastor/priest before you attend. And beware that a lot of churches that loudly advertise “Everybody is welcome” are usually quite evangelical.

This site has some good objective reviews of various sects:

Something I did before I started anywhere, was I looked around for different churches. I wasn’t sure where to go either. I prayed about where I needed to go. God led me to the church I’m now attending & am a part of.
It’s a church that teaches the Bible based truth. They don’t judge me for my past. They love & care about me & my family. Most importantly they teach the love of Jesus Christ.
I’m so thankful that the Lord led me to this particular church.
    It’s a UPCI church & I love it.

Sounds like you just want a religion that fit your wants and needs. But we have to worship God in the way he prescribes. John 4:23, 24 explains: “Nevertheless, the hour is coming, and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth, for, indeed, the Father is looking for suchlike ones to worship him.  God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with spirit and truth.”
If you want to learn how to worship God his way, contact Jehovah’s Witnesses to learn more.

Your proving Jesus right once again. He said that people would seek those to tickle their ears. (People want to hear what pleases them)
    No offence intended

If you don’t find a church you like, try Humanism.

try a medium sized, non-denominational church with contemporary music. you will be pleasantly surprized.

I can tell you the best thing is to pray first. when i did that i felt led to go to the UPCI. I have been there since Christmas 2000. Its not uptight, etc.Though there will be some in every crowd, but hey! But seriously pray first. yes, these churches do exist. most churches don’t do very many hymns anymore. If you want the website, e-mail me. That way I can’t get sanctioned for proselytizing.

I think so. Although I think you are missing a lot if you remove music from worship, you will find that most Episcopal churches have a morning service (usually around 8 a.m.) which is not choral. If you tell the priest there that you are searching, your questions and inquiries would be welcomed in every Episcopal church I have attended. Maybe later you can learn the glories of hymnody. :)
From your description of what you are looking for, I do not think you would be happy in a UPCI church, nor the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Unitarian-Universalist is certainly on the liberal side of the equation, but they are not Christian (Christianity is trinitarian, not unitarian).
