Why do people claim that God gave them an interpretation when there are so many denominations?

SmallChurchWarrior asked the question:

I am a Christian. I go to a Church of God of Prophecy church(the name scares most people off). i belive in what the Bible tells me, not the teachings of some tv preacher with a neck tie that costs more than my truck. I just want to know why people add and take away from the Bible that has stood the test of time and predates all other religions, but is translated into so many different denominations and teachings?

An exmaple being: The Lords Supper. some people have it every Sunday, some once a year… Some people say members only, some say eveyone… some say only those who are saved, some say examine yourself and know that you are not worthy of this but God allows you to because He loves you.
I do not question God’s plan. I do ask Him questions. I did not say that the denomination i am in predates nething i know its only 110 years old if that, i said “why do people add and take away from the Bible that has stood the test of time and predates all other religions, but is translated into so many different denominations and teachings?”
i dont think you got what i said radiofrog… i said Bible not Christianity. the Bible predates others… i know the Jews have been around for a very long time… so next time you start bashing some one read what they had to say first… its people like you that push others away.

The bible covers so much ground, that people tend to emphasize certain parts and ignore others.. After while it gets laborous. I agree that it is hard to keep balanced, but your salvation depends on Christ and not that every little doctrine is perfect.

    Denomanations are man made.

As much as they don’t like to say it, it’s all up to interpreting which scripture passage has more credibility in that situation than the others. Some sing with instruments some sing without them, some with a chorus and some not. Some have make sure your ass gives 10% some aren’t so strict. What gives?

You know nothing of God’s will. It is unattainable to you.
Are you questioning us, or God himself? Obviously, God has a plan, and that plan has in it the interpretation of the Bible in many different ways.

For instance, the Catholic Church (no I’m not Catholic) pre-dates YOUR Church by hundreds of years, why don’t you believe their interpretation. It’s much older.

The Church of God of Prophecy is exactly the kind of “new interpretation” of which you are questioning the validity. Why do you even go to church at all? I thought you didn’t need a preacher to tell you anything, and that you read and understand the Bible for yourself.

Next, Christianity DOES NOT pre-date Judaism (Jewish Religion). Where do you get this stuff? AS a matter of fact, there are MANY religions that go back further than Christianity.

Read 2ND Pet.1:20. The bible interprets itself!
The Lords Supper was held on the passover in the bible. It was once a year. Read Lev.23. Christ was the passover lamb.Rev. 13:8 No where does the bible say have the passover (Lords Supper) whenever you want. People keep Christmas & easter at the same time each year & neither of these are commanded in the bible. What Jesus says to do is not being done by most but the most are doing things that aren’t commanded. Read Rev.22:18-19 & Deut. 12:30-32.

Of course, just because someone says their interpretation is from God doesn’t make it so. And it doesn’t make it not so either. I’ve noticed that no single person is right on everything, but nearly everyone is right about something. The same goes with denominations, though they certainly aren’t all created equally. But denominations are predominantly man-made, and usually either came about because someone had an opinion which they exalted above unity in the Church, or because the Church had an opinion contrary to the Word and people who believed the Word had to go somewhere else. But it’s good that you stick to the Bible. If any preacher, denomination, prophet, teacher, or person believes something contrary to God’s word, they are simply wrong.
But the Bible also says not to fight about differing opinions (Romans 14:1). It is spiritual immaturity to fight over silly things like what words to say for a baptism or what style of music to play in church. Denominations need to learn to get along, so long as they are about exalting the Lord Jesus Christ and living by His Word.

OK, this is just a thought. But I got into the same thing when I studied John Wesley’s concept of “second blessing holiness.” [By the way, I used to live near a congregation that was a part of your denomination. You ain'y scary. ;-)] For what its worth, this is what I came up with, and its just my opinion. Sometimes a person reads a verse or section of scripture that REALLY says something to them. Something maybe no one else has ever noticed. The reason for it is that God is trying to show THEM something they need to know. It may nat apply to anyone else. But they miss that part and in trying to share it (which is OK) it becomes something else. It becomes “THIS is the way it is and its this way for everyone!” rather than what it was meant to be, which was “THIS is for YOU, if I wanted everyone else to see it I’d have shown it to everyone else.” And its not that God is showing respect of persons in a case like this because I honestly believe that this type of thing is availabe to everyone. No respect of persons there. Its just that different people need to see things in a way that THEY can understand it and so grow closer to God. That’s all it is. God dealing with people where they are. But, human ego being what it is, folks make something else out of it. And then theres the other thing where people just try to make it (the Bible) say all kinds of weird and wonderful stuff it doesn’t because they want attention and money. And of course there is always ignorance, but that’s another topic. But, hey, you can get that at Wal-Mart too. ;-)
